The news came in between the meeting at the Prosecutor’s office. Richards had been the one who called him and told him. Katsuya listened quietly as Richards described a domestic scuffle that had injured David.

“He’s okay! Really!” Richards said. “A few stitches, the EMS tech said. He was conscious and everything.”

“I see,” Katsuya said. He was pacing in the break room – circling the lone table in there as he took the call. “Do you need me back at the station?”

There was a pause, as if the question was the most difficult one he had to answer.

“I’m not sure. I don’t think so,” Richards finally said. “Montoya’s with him now. I just called to let you know.”

Katsuya thanked him and hung up. He stood in the center of the room, his hand still clenched the cellphone until the secretary paged him to return to the meeting. Katsuya returned to the hours-long meeting, staring at the Prosecutor but without registering much information. He only became alert to the end of the meeting, when Donohue closed his leather-bound notebook.

Even before the attorney could finish his invitation for a dinner and drink, Katsuya had snapped his brief case close and declined.

“One of my colleagues’ been hurt on a call this morning,” Katsuya said, offering his hand. “I would like to see him.”

Donahue took Katsuya’s hand and instead of shaking it, he placed his other hand over it.

“Of course. Rain check next week. You always slip away right after the meetings.”

Katsuya offered a non-committal smile and said another good-bye as he made his exit. He was surprised to see Montoya sitting in a chair by the secretary, leafing through a PEOPLE magazine when he stepped out.

“Mike,” Katsuya said.

Montoya placed the magazine on the secretary’s desk and stood up. His jacket was rumpled, as usual. And there were too many creases on the lap of his pants that were tell-tale that he sat behind a desk for too long.
“Doc,” Montoya said, nodding. He brushed at the wrinkles at his sleeves as he stepped forward.

“I was informed about Detective Krause,” Katsuya started. He didn’t say any more, when Montoya nodded.

“I know,” he said. “That’s why I am here.”

Montoya stopped a step in front of Katsuya. For a tense moment, Katsuya was anticipating the worst. That he would be told terrible news that Richards couldn’t say to him on the phone.

“He checked himself out of the hospital a couple of hours ago,” Montoya continued as he reached into his pocket. He pulled out a bundle of keys that Katsuya instantly recognized. “Captain said he’ll let him have a couple of days off.”

Montoya held out David’s keys and Katsuya took them.

“He’s cranky and still on some kind of drugs when I took him home,” Montoya said. “I figure the only person he wouldn’t dare to yell at or hit would be you.”

“Will he be okay?”

Montoya shrugged.

“The pain and the pain killers’ going to make him a bitch to be around for awhile but he’ll live. The guys will come in and check on him later but I’d like it if you could stay with him tonight and at least tomorrow. Just make sure he takes the meds.”

Katsuya nodded.

“Thanks doc,” Montoya said. He rubbed at the salt-and-pepper colored stubbles at his chin. There’s a smile on his face. “Please see to him.”

The sun had already gone down when Katsuya reached David’s place. Katsuya parked in David’s empty car slot and went up the stairs. He felt like a clumsy criminal, as he sorted through the bundle of keys Montoya gave him. Except for the car key that had the logo stamped on it, he couldn’t tell which one opened the door. He went through four keys before the lock finally turned.

Katsuya clicked on the light as soon as he stepped in. The bedroom, down the hall on his left – was open and the light was on. Katsuya took off his jacket and shoes and made his way there. He peered in and saw David sleeping on top of the duvet. His shirt was half open. He was bare-foot but his dress pants was still on. He looked as if he was just dumped there.

Katsuya walked to the dresser where three small bottles of prescription pills sat. He read the labels on each one. Then he looked at David’s gun that had been taken out of its holster and cleared. The gun’s slide was pulled back and its two filled cartridges next to it. He touched the gun – running his finger along the barrel. It was the first time Katsuya had seen the Beretta out of its holster.

“Came all this way just to fondle my gun?”

Katsuya was startled, his hand knocking over one of the bottles as he jumped a little.

“Mike asked me to look in on you,” Katsuya said, collecting his bearing quickly as he turned. David was awake but he looked tired.

“Good man,” David said. He patted a side of his bed. “Then come here and look after me.”

“When was your last dosage?” Katsuya said.

“I’ll take something when I’m in pain,” David said. “Come here and look after me.”

Katsuya took off his tie first and undid a few of the top buttons on his shirt before walking to the bed. He placed his glasses on the night stand and laid next to David. He rested his head on David’s out stretched arm. Katsuya could smell the hospital on David.

“Will you be okay?” Katsuya said, after a long bout of silence passed.

“I cut myself deeper shaving,” David said and gathered Katsuya closer to him.

“It’s not like you to let this happen.”

David laughed softly.

“No it’s not,” David said. “But not many people think to be on guard against a 73 year-old grandmother.”

“You were stabbed by an elderly woman?”

“Probably why I survived it. She didn’t cut very deep.”

“Captain said you didn’t want to press charges…”

“What’s the point of tossing a senior into jail? I brought bad news about her grand kids being found dead and she didn’t take the news well.”

Katsuya nestled closer and moved to lay his head on David’s chest.

“She was cutting up vegetables to make this giant pot of soup. Montoya and I were in the kitchen, breaking the news to her. The two kids were missing for a few days. She thought we were there to tell her that we found the kids and to come down to the station to collect them or something. Then I told her I was from Homicide and we had found the kids strangled and locked in the trunk in a stolen car in the Bronx. Then there’s just yelling and screaming and crying that I was lying to her. All cops lie.”

“It’s a very difficult task, to bear bad news. It’s terribly stressful to have to absorb the negatives and be completely helpless against it.”

“You get used to it,” David said. “I just care about not taking it home with me.”

Katsuya rose, swung a leg over and straddled over David.

“I’m glad you are okay,” he said, leaning in and kissed David’s mouth.

“And I’m glad you will be my sexy nurse…or should I say doctor, for the next few days.”

“I’m here to make sure you take your meds,” Katsuya said. “And in your condition, we shouldn’t – “

“I wasn’t cut there,” David said.
